The eight counties at risk of Level Three 'lockdown' within days as experts to make decision

Dublin became the first county to enter a Level Three 'lockdown' last week after a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the region.

However some more counties could soon join the capital as Covid-19 continues to spread across the country.

Louth, Waterford, Limerick, Kildare, Leitrim, Donegal, Offaly and Wicklow are all being closely watched by the Government.

In a press conference yesterday, Department of the Taoiseach secretary general Liz Canavan said these eight counties are now showing "concerning" trends in terms of the growth of Covid-19.

Ms Canavan said: “As of Friday, the rate of incidence of the virus per 100,000 population was showing trends in all but six counties.

“County Louth has seen 120 cases in the last two weeks compared to 18 in the previous two weeks.

“There has also been a rise in Donegal, with 103 cases in the last fortnight from 18 in the previous fortnight.

“Counties like Wicklow, Limerick and Waterford have also seen concerning increases.

“In Wicklow over the last number of weeks, cases have jumped from 19 to 99.”

Last night health officials confirmed Dublin again saw the highest coronavirus cases rise today with a further 76.

188 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed on Monday evening with 19 out of 26 counties in the Republic seeing a rise.

Cork, which had been remaining low with its cases figures is starting to see a spike, with a further 25 today.

Donegal, Louth and Waterford have all been listed as counties on the edge of level three with all but one of them seeing another rise today.

Donegal's figure for Monday was 21 with another seven in Waterford.

Of the new infections announced on Monday, here is a breakdown by county:

  • 76 in Dublin
  • 25 in Cork
  • 21 in Donegal
  • 16 in Kildare
  • 13 in Galway
  • 7 in Roscommon
  • 7 in Waterford
  • Remaining 23 cases spread across 12 counties
