The EFL issue statement ahead of Leyton Orient vs Tottenham game after positive Covid-19 tests

The EFL have issued a statement following the news that a number of Leyton Orient players have tested positive for Covid-19.

Tottenham are due to play the League Two side in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening but the game has now been thrown into doubt.

The statement from The EFL read : "The EFL has been made aware of positive test results recorded at Leyton Orient and is currently awaiting the outcome of discussions between the Club and Public Health England which will determine what, if any, action is required outside of adhering to current protocols and guidance."

Earlier on Monday afternoon Orient confirmed that all of their first-team squad had been tested for Covid-19 following Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to Mansfield Town.

However, they did reveal that a number of players had tested positive and that an announcement regarding the match would be made shortly.

"Following our game on Saturday 19th September, COVID-19 testing was conducted on all of our first-team playing squad," read the statement on the club's official website.

"Today (Monday 21st) we received formal confirmation which shows that a number of our first-team squad have tested positive for COVID-19.

"We have informed the EFL and Tottenham Hotspur and will make a further announcement regarding Tuesday’s match shortly.

"We have also informed Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle and Oldham Athletic, our three most recent opponents, prior to the public release of this information.

"Leyton Orient’s priority is the health and well-being of its players and staff. Those who have tested positive will now strictly follow government self-isolation guidelines.

"The Breyer Group Stadium and training ground facilities will be closed until further notice.

"At this time, the club will make no further comment."

Tottenham's match against Ross Embleton's side comes at the start of another busy week for the club as they face three games in three different competitions.

Spurs are due to play Shkendija in the Europa League on Thursday, with a home game against Newcastle United on Sunday.
