The effect Sir Alex Ferguson had on Scott McTominay at Manchester United

Scott McTominay has revealed how he and his Manchester United teammates at youth level used to be awestruck whenever they encountered Sir Alex Ferguson.

McTominay joined United as a five-year-old so had plenty of experience of Ferguson as Reds boss up until the Scot's retirement in 2013.

The 22-year-old midfielder was asked by MOTDx which senior United player he was most taken aback by when he was coming through the ranks as a youngster.

But McTominay neglected to name a player, instead mentioning fellow countryman Ferguson as the figure who had the biggest impact on him.

"The boss," McTominay said. "Sir Alex. Whenever we saw him in the canteen he’d always say: ‘Are you behaving yourself?’ And you’d just be quiet.

"You never know what to say, especially with him being from Scotland.

"It was special, he invited me up when I signed my scholarship with all the players in the dressing room.”

McTominay added that his nickname when he was in the academy was Tin Man, in reference to the fictional character from the Wizard of Oz.

"I used to get called the Tin Man by my old reserve team coach,” McTominay said.

"You know when you get a bit taller? You can’t really move your legs that well and things like that.

"Warren Joyce called me it, forever remembered."
