The Edouard Mendy moment that may have signalled the end for Kepa at Chelsea

It was a moment that earned Chelsea a point but also proved the value of having a confident goalkeeper.

The added time board had just appeared at Old Trafford yesterday evening, showing four extra minutes for someone to break the stalemate, when the ball broke to Marcus Rashford on the edge of the penalty area.

At the end of a week in which the Manchester United striker has dominated the front and back pages, there was a feeling of inevitability as he sent a right-footed effort towards the right corner of Chelsea's goal.

Then Edouard Mendy sprung into action, diving at full stretch to get both hands to the shot, conceding a corner but maintaing his clean sheet.

It was his second impressive stop from Rashford, using his right foot in the first half to deny the England international on the counterattack.

No wonder Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt that United would have won if it was not for the goalkeeper.

"Their keeper made two fantastic saves from Marcus," he said. "He pulled off some fantastic saves. If there was a winner it should have been us for those chances."

Lampard was clearly pleased too, saying: "His performance was very good. You rely on your goalkeepers in those moments in a tight game, not full of many chances.

"Rashford's first chance was a mistake from us, the one at the end was a moment of quality from him. He showed us what he is there for. We brought him in for his quality.

"He showed great composure in the games he's played already and with the saves today in a tight you rely on them moments."
