The edge Leif Davis has as he looks to break into the Leeds United first-team

Leeds United youngster Leif Davis stands a better chance of breaking into head coach Marcelo Bielsa's first-team plans on a regular basis because he is naturally left-footed.

That is the view according to former Whites defender Danny Mills, who racked up over 100 appearances when playing for the club between 1999 and 2004.

Davis is a highly-rated, promising youngster at Elland Road, with the 19-year-old having been brought to everyone's attention on occasions last season following a move from Morecambe.

But whilst Davis is not the only promising young player to be breaking through Leeds' academy ranks, Mills believes that Davis has an advantage over other members of the club's crop of young talent, purely because he is left-footed.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said: "It's dangling the carrot in front of him. It's an opportunity to say: 'Look, you've done well, if you want to go to the next level you're going to have to do even better.

"If you're a good player and you're left-footed, you do have an advantage. You always have done, that is just how it is.

"The lefties are quite rare so if you've got a good one, the best thing to do is keep hold of him."

So far this term, Davis, who signed a new contract with the Elland Road outfit earlier this week, extending his stay in West Yorkshire until 2023, has made five appearances for Bielsa's team in league and cup combined.
