The economic impact of Tunisia's political turmoil

Tunisian President Kais Saied has rejected calls for talks over the crisis that followed his sacking of the prime minister and suspension of parliament at the end of last month. The president has yet to lay out future plans or appoint a government, bolstering an atmosphere of uncertainty in an economy already in tatters.

Also in this edition, the island of Mauritius is still reeling from an oil spill that devastated the country one year ago. In late July 2020, Japanese vessel MV Wakashio crashed into one of the island’s most fragile coral reefs and began leaking fuel a few weeks later, causing the worst environmental disaster the country has ever known. Today, affected communities are growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of major action to protect the area’s surrounding waters from similar incidents. As a result, the impact of the disaster continues to weigh heavily on the environment and livelihoods.

Finally, we take you to northern Djibouti where 7,000-year-old cave paintings depict the ancient lives of humans and animals, now long-extinct to the area.
