The early-hours missed phone calls from Wayne Pivac that told his son something big had happened in Wales

A social media wit let it be known in the aftermath of Saturday’s game in Cardiff that "under Covid rules Cardiff police have fined the English rugby team for making a pointless trip to Wales".

Fun and games.

Bradley Pivac is now up to speed on the situation but it took him some time to get there.

Overnight, Wayne Pivac’s son received a couple of calls from his dad, who was presumably more than a shade excited, wanting to let him know all about the drama at the Principality Stadium hours earlier. Wales had beaten England 40-24 to win a Six Nations Triple Crown and evidently Wales’ head coach wanted to share the good news.

But Pivac junior was out for count, fast asleep at home in New Zealand.

He has since tweeted: "Just woke up...couple of missed calls from Wayno. Think I may have missed a good one."

Indeed he did, from a Welsh perspective at least.

Never before had Wales scored 40 points in a Test against England. Not since 1998 had they scored four tries in an edition of the fixture.

His father has overseen a Triple Crown success which few saw coming.

After a dreadful 2020, when Wales won just three out of 10 games, the team were not expected to achieve much in this Six Nations, with their form and the absence of home supporters leading some to predict they’d finish the campaign among the also-rans.

It hasn’t worked out that way — not at all.

There are two rounds left and work still to do, but when Wales head for Paris in a fortnight there’s every chance they’ll be playing for a Grand Slam.

Maybe, just maybe, Brad will stay awake for that one.

It could be worth losing a few hours sleep over.
