The earliest date Hearts can win the Scottish Championship as Robbie Neilson's team seek quickfire Premiership return

It's been a long 18 months for Hearts, but with every passing week, they look that little bit closer to being back in the big time.

It hasn't all been plain sailing in Robbie Neilson's second spell, but the returning boss has brought some of the fun back to Tynecastle after their contentious and damaging relegation.

They've won 12 of their 15 matches so far and look well on their way to bouncing back into the top flight at the first time of asking.

There is still work to do - their 12-point lead over Raith Rovers hasn't earned them 'champions elect' status just yet.

But the chances of Raith, Dunfermline or Dundee scaling that chasm in the remainder of a shortened 27-game season seem fanciful at best.

Hearts fans might still be biting their tongue but it is starting to seem like a matter of when rather than if and, that being the case, the time has come to start considering when the Jambos will officially get their hands on the trophy.

They currently sit atop the division on 36 points. Second place Raith have 24 - so with 13 games to play, the highest number of points points they can possibly attain is 63.

That would leave Hearts needing 28 points to absolutely guarantee the title - that's nine wins and a draw from their final 13 matches.

It is highly unlikely to come to that, however. As we know, the Championship is one of the most unpredictable divisions in football, which is why Hearts have been able to open up such a commanding lead in the first place.

Second-placed Rovers haven't strung two wins together since October, and it's a similar story for Dunfermline and Dundee who have found consistency hard to come by.

Keeping that in mind, Edinburgh Live have crunched the numbers to come up with a more realistic prediction.

Taking that ever popular points per game statistic into account, Hearts' 2.4 average puts them on track to finish the season on 65 points. Raith, second place on the PPG table (1.7), are on course for 49.

If we assume the points continue to be doled out at a broadly even rate, that would put Hearts on track to clinch the title at East End Park against Dunfermline on April 3.

The earliest they can possibly win the league is in five games time - but that is entirely hypothetical, as it would require each of the three teams behind them not to pick up a single point between them.

If you're making early plans for a title party, then, April 3 is your provisional date to work with - but as always, it's subject to change.
