The earliest Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham could join new European Premier League

Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly in discussions over the creation of a new European Premier League.

According to Sky News, financiers are assembling a £4.6 billion finance package to create the new league which would feature the elite clubs of European football.

More than a dozen teams from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are said to be in negotiations about becoming the founding members of the new league.

Though, it's not clear from the report whether it would mean those clubs would withdraw from domestic competitions or whether it could replace the Champions League.

According to the report, as many as five English clubs could join the league, likely including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, and it is being tipped to kick off as early as 2022, which is the very earliest it could begin.

That's because, as reported previously by football.london, it's understood there is a contractual agreement clubs already have in place with UEFA tying them to their current competitions until the end of the 2021/22 season.

Under that contract, there is just a year and a half remaining on the deal which ensures Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs remain in the Premier League.

After that - theoretically - clubs would be able to move into a new competition such as the aforementioned European Premier League, but there are still a number of hoops organisers would need to jump through to get it passed.

And as mentioned above, it's still unclear whether clubs would actually leave the Premier League or if elite clubs are hoping to reformat the existing Champions League with the creation of the new competition.
