The DWP announces major changes to benefits affecting 300,000 people

The Government has announced major changes to PIP benefits which will affect almost 300,000 pensioners.

Thousands of disabled pensioners will now no longer have to go through "unnecessary reassessments'" on their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefits.

PIP was introduced in 2013 and is designed to help with extra costs for those who have long term ill-health or a disability.

The changes were announced by the Department for Work and Pensions, reports North Wales Live .

Those whose personal circumstances are unlikely to change will no longer have to be reassessed under the new changes.

Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd previously announced in March that people receiving PIP who have reached State Pension age will no longer have their awards regularly reviewed.

On the current changes, she said the benefit system should be a "source of support".

She said: "That’s why we’re scrapping needless PIP reassessments for pensioners whose situation is unlikely to change.

"This underlines our commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable get the support they’re entitled to."

Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson added: "I want to ensure we live in a fair and decent society in which all of us, whatever age or ability, have an equal chance to live a fulfilling life.

"We are committed to ensuring that everyone receives the support they’re entitled to, allowing them to live independently."
