The drug driver who keeps getting into trouble because of cannabis

A drug driver who keeps getting into trouble over cannabis has narrowly avoided jail.

Iman Mohammed, 29, was pulled over by police in Chorlton after they became suspicious because he was driving an 'unusual route'.

Officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from his Skoda Octavia after they pulled him over, and there was some cannabis in the car.

They took a swab from Mohammed and found there were cannaboids in his system, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Mohammed later admitted drug driving and possessing cannabis, following the incident at about 1.30am on September 29 last year.

Months earlier he had appeared in court after cannabis plants and just under £23,000 was found at his home in Fallowfield.

In July 2018, police searched the property and found 29 cannabis plants in an adjoining garage.

If sold in bulk, the drugs could have been worth £6,500, but if sold in smaller deals it could have been worth just under £13,000, prosecutor Simone Flynn said.

Police also found almost £15,500 in a bag in the garden, and a further £7,000 inside the house.

Mohammed received a 12 month sentence suspended for two years after admitting producing cannabis; possessing criminal property; and abstracting electricity.

He faced a possible jail sentence as his more recent offences were a breach of that order.

Defending, Stuart Duke said Mohammed had received a 'glowing' report from the probation service.

Mr Duke said Mohammed had 'difficulties' when he was younger.

He said the defendant's use of cannabis was 'proving problematic'.

Sentencing, Judge Alan Conrad QC told Mohammed: "It was stupid of you to go out driving with drugs in your system and have cannabis in your car when you knew you were subject to a suspended sentence.

"You might well have ended up going to prison.

"But I am impressed by the progress you have made. I am not going to send you to prison today."

Mohammed, of Martlet Close, Fallowfield, was sentenced to a 12 month community order, to include a six month drug rehabilitation program, 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and a two month curfew from 9pm to 6am.

He was also banned from driving for 12 months.
