The Drowning finale mocked by viewers after 'farcical' explanation for Tom's disappearance

Viewers of Channel 5 drama The Drowning were less than impressed this evening as they dubbed its conclusion "farcical".

Throughout the four-part series, starring Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones, fans attempted to piece figure out what had happened to Tom after he disappeared nine years ago.

Grief-stricken mum Jodie (Halfpenny) became increasingly determined to prove that teen Daniel was actually Tom.

However, she later discovered through an independent DNA test that she wasn't his mum - leaving her baffled over the initial DNA test which had said that she was his mum.

It was later revealed that Jason had been keeping an eye on Tom nine years ago, but had gone to take a phone call about a job he had been offered.

When he turned back, he discovered that Tom had drowned and feared that he would lose his job as he was 'to blame'.

He then pushed Tom's body further out into the lake, hoping that it would be discovered later and that no one would be to blame. However, the body had never been found.

Jason said that he had faked Daniel's DNA test to get Jodie out of prison and to avoid further questions about Tom's disappearance.

It all wrapped up with one final boat chase before Jason drowned in the lake and viewers were.... baffled.

One tweeted: "It started off really well but it was like the writers didn’t know where to go with it after half way and it all ended up a complete farce #disappointing #TheDrowning."

While another pointed out: "How stupid. Tom died in an accident. Doubt Jason would have gone to prison. #TheDrowning."

A third wrote: "So a job offer meant more to him than his own nephew drowning. Unbelievable. #TheDrowning."

"Possibly the worst telly ever. Why did I watch this. #thedrowning," another fumed.

A fan fumed: "4 hours of my life l’ll never get back. Load of garbage #TheDrowning."

One threatened: "@channel5_tv don't ever do anything like this again. Ever. #TheDrowning."
