The Drowning ending left Jill Halfpenny stunned by shocking 'betrayal'

Jill Halfpenny revealed even she was stunned at how The Drowning ended with 'the worst betrayal in the world.'

The four part drama lived up to its hype as it aired over consecutive nights on Channel 5 this week with Jill playing Jodie, a mother who becomes convinced she has seen her son Tom, nine years on from his drowning in a lake, believing him to be a boy named Daniel she spots outside a school.

The final episode went out on Thursday night and if you haven't watched it yet * SPOILER ALERT * as Jill appeared on This Morning to speak to Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary to talk about its conclusion, which saw Jodie's brother Jason admitting to having a part in Tom's death, having turned hus back on him while he was playing by the water, and calling in a favour to get a DNA test result to falsely reveal Daniel to be him.

As Dermot put headphones on to avoid any spoilers, Alison said to Jill: "I did not see what happened happening! Daniel was NOT Jodie's son!

"I really genuinely thought he was; I couldn't believe it!

"When you read the script what did you think?"

Appearing via video call from her North Tyneside home, Jill replied: "Same as you! I really wanted him to be Tom! At the end of episode 3 when they said 'it's a match, he's your son' I said yes yes yes!....but then I thought 'there's a whole episode to go here.'

"I didn't call it at all."

Addressing Jason's shock betrayal, Alison exclaimed: "And even worse still, Jason, her brother is partly to blame as to why he's dead!"

Jill responded: "Yes Jason, the only person I thought I had a truly loving relationship with - it was the worst betrayal in the world!"

The Drowning's final scenes saw Jodie row her and Daniel to safety as Jason swam into the lake to try and catch up with them.

And, rather aptly given the drama's title, it was Jason who ended up drowning, with Jodie doing nothing to try and save him.
