Irish singer and guitarist Dearbhla Minogue’s wonderfully naive-sounding layered vocals and harmonies soar through the Drink’s debut album to create a warm, choral sound that straddles the American west coast dream pop of Warpaint and the roaming melodies of traditional British folk. While the drums-bass-guitar setup of the London-based three-piece doesn’t lend itself to a wholly original album, the unusual time signatures, occasional bursts of fantastically odd lyrics (“It came to me in a blood transfusion,” opens At the Weekend) and a small injection of Graceland-esque Afrobeat provide some interesting departures from well-trodden indie ground.
