The dramatic moment winchman lowered 220ft into waterfall after a man fell into shallow water

This is the heart-stopping moment a man was rescued by a helicopter winchman lowered more than 200ft into a gorge.

The victim was walking through the gorge near the Sgwd Gwladus waterfall in the Brecon Beacons National Park when he fell some 20ft into shallow water.

Now this dramatic footage has been released by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of the gravity-defying rescue.

The drama started at around 12.50pm on Sunday (June 23), when Dyfed Powys Police requested air support from HM Coastguard's Air Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC).

A gorge walker was reported to have fallen 20ft into shallow water from a waterfall.

As the helicopter neared the scene, members of the public alerted rescuers by using their mobile phone camera flashes.

The major operation involved the HM Coastguard St Athan helicopter, together with the Central Beacons and Western Beacons mountain rescue teams and a Hazardous Area Response Team.

What followed was described as "a complex rescue involving the helicopter hovering high above the heavily wooded tree line in the steep-sided valley."

The winchman paramedic was lowered down to the man from 220ft using the aircraft hoist.

The injured man, who had suffered a serious leg injury, was then treated at the scene and put on a stretcher, before being winched up to the aircraft.

He was flown for treatment at a Swansea hospital.

Dickey Green posted on Facebook that he was a witness to the rescue.

He said: "I saw this happening and waited in case help was needed.

"I have to say, unbelievable skill by the helicopter pilot, winch man and all involved!"

A spokesman for the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: "After a group on friends went gorge walking, one gentleman misjudged his jump into the water and hit a ledge.

"His friends called help, HART were on scene treating, and the helicopter was requested for extraction.

"Team members from Western Beacons Mountain Rescue & Central Beacons Mountain Rescue were also drafted in to assist with the rescue of the gentleman.

"He was placed on a stretcher and taken to a safe place to be winched onto the helicopter."

The man was airlifted to hospital with potential leg and spinal injuries, the spokesman said.
