The double Champions League omen that is very good news for Liverpool

As Liverpool continue to chase down a first league title since 1990, the Champions League has been something of an afterthought over the course of the campaign.

But after defeating Porto on Tuesday night, Jurgen Klopp's side find themselves with one foot in the semi-finals.

First half goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino clinched a 2-0 win for the Reds, allowing fans to dream of a potential clash with Barcelona or Manchester United in the final four of the competition

And history is in Liverpool's favour with the club having never thrown away a 2-0 first leg lead in Europe, while they only time they have conceded a two-goal advantage came in controversial circumstances against Inter Milan during their first ever continental campaign back in 1965.

The Reds have prepared for a second leg with a 2-0 lead on 12 different occasions, with the first coming against Petrolul Ploiesti in the European Cup first round in 1966/67.

Goals from Ian St John and Ian Callaghan sealed a first leg victory at Anfield, before Roger Hunt's solitary strike proved vital in a 3-1 away defeat in Romania.

Coming before the away goal ruling, the Reds progressed courtesy of a 2-0 victory in a replay at a neutral venue.

The other 11 occasions have been rather more straight-forward.

First following up a 2-0 victory over Malmo with a 2-1 win in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1967/68, Liverpool progressed past Eintracht Frankfurt and Dynamo Dresden without conceding a goal on their way to UEFA Cup glory in 1973.

It was a similar story against Crusaders three seasons later as the Reds started their march to their maiden European Cup win in 1977 with a 7-0 aggregate win.

Dean Saunders scored a brace against Swarovski Tirol in the UEFA Cup third round in Austria, before following it up with a hat-trick as Liverpool won the return leg 4-0 at Anfield in 1991.

Michael Owen's famously scored a brace away at AS Roma during the Reds' route to UEFA Cup glory as part of their treble season in 2000/01, making a 1-0 defeat at Anfield irrelevant, while Liverpool knocked out Levski Sofia 6-2 on aggregate in the same competition three years later.

Liverpool's triumphant 2004/05 Champions League campaign started with a Steven Gerrard brace in Rafael Benitez's first game in charge away at Grazer AK with the Reds surviving a 1-0 loss at Anfield in the second leg.

Meanwhile, a Fernando Torres strike added to late Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt goals at Anfield to see off Inter Milan in the Champions League first knockout round in 2008.

Roy Hodgson's brief Anfield era started with a 4-0 aggregate victory over Rabotnicki in the Europa League third qualifying round 2010, David Ngog netting a brace in Macedonia before opening the scoring prior to a Gerrard penalty back at Anfield.

And the last time Liverpool took a 2-0 lead into a European second leg came against Manchester United in the Europa League during Klopp's first season in charge as Daniel Sturridge and Firmino scored at Anfield before Philippe Coutinho wrapped up a 3-1 aggregate win at Old Trafford.

But it's not just the Reds' history that can leave Klopp's side confident of taking their place in the semi-finals. Porto have never recovered from a 2-0 first leg deficit in continental competition, losing on all four occasions.

Jurgen Klopp handed Champions League disciplinary boost as Liverpool put one foot in semi-finals

Meanwhile, such is Liverpool's form this season, they are yet to lose by a scoreline that would see them exit the Champions League if replicated in Portugal. You have to go back to their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in October 2017 for the last time they suffered such a defeat

They have lost by two goals just once, away at Red Star Belgrade, while they have also only conceded three goals once - in their home victory over Crystal Palace.

Liverpool re-established themselves among Europe's elite with their run to the final last year, with their astonishing 5-0 win over Porto at the Estadio do Dragao their first major statement of intent.

While no-one is expecting the Reds to record victory by such an emphatic scoreline in Portugal this time around, it will be a major surprise if they don't progress in the competition.
