The Doner kebab toastie 'going down a storm' at Tynemouth Market food stall

We usually enjoy them in a wrap or stuffed into a pita - but how would you like to try a doner kebab in a toastie?

This mouth-watering meal has been unveiled by a food stall at Tynemouth Market, where it “went down a storm” with customers on its debut weekend.

Husband and wife duo Nicki Thompson and Dean Thompson set up their Mardi Gras No.58 food stall at the popular market in October last year, specialising in sourdough toasties “with a twist”.

Their signature sarnies include the Brekki Banjo, which is packed with sausage, bacon, egg and cheese, and the Tuna Laguna with red onion and cheese.

The stall strives to serve up “quirky and modern” toasties that are a step up from the usual ham and cheese - like the customer favourite Popeye Pesto, a toastie filled with pesto-coated chicken, spinach and cheese.

For those who like their toasties with a kick there’s also the Buffalo Badboy, made of spicy beef mince with jalapenos and fresh chillies.

Mardi Gras has already taken inspiration from other popular takeaway dishes, with their Pizza Pepperoni toastie sandwiching pizza toppings between two sourdough slices.

But from day one of opening their Tynemouth stall, Dean - dubbed the “Kebab King” by wife Nicki - was determined to turn his favourite takeaway into a toastie.

After managing to convince Nicki, the pair set about perfecting their new invention and introduced the “Doner Delish” toastie to visitors at Tynemouth Market at the end of January.

Packed with doner meat, crispy red onion, gooey melted cheese, and finished off with garlic and chilli sauce, Nicki and Dean urged people via their Facebook page: “Don’t knock it until you try it!”.

The toastie proved a huge hit with curious customers on its first weekend - so much so that they have decided to make it a permanent addition to the menu.

Nicki and Dean have told their toastie fans to “watch this space” for more indulgent inventions from Mardi Gras No. 58.
