The dominant Celtic goal stat that lays bare Rangers' ultimate challenge in Premiership glory quest

Ask any fan about facing Celtic and they'll probably tell you you've got to avoid conceding early doors to be in with any chance.

While it's rare for either side to lose, fans of most other clubs can probably count on one hand the number of times their side has come from behind to win against Scottish football's dominant force.

Given that Celtic have won the league for eight years in a row it's pretty obvious that they don't lose often but the statistics bear out just how difficult a task teams face if they concede first.

The CIES Football Observatory studied matches between Between January 2015 and December 2019, and found that the Hoops won 88.6 per cent of matches in which they scored first.

That was better than the likes of Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

And while rivals Rangers' 81 per cent win rate isn't to be sniffed at - it's behind Derek McInnes' Aberdeen side over the same period who boast a 85 per cent success rate.

But Steven Gerrard 's record would be further reduced if the study counted defeats against Hearts and Kilmarnock during their stumbling run in 2020.

At the other end of the scale Hamilton were the worst team at holding a lead over the period studied, winning just over half the games in which they scored the first goal.

Here's how your team stacks up.

Matches won when scoring first goal

12) Hamilton - 53.5 per cent

11) St Mirren - 63.5 per cent

10) Ross County - 64.4 per cent

9) Kilmarnock - 65 per cent

8) Motherwell - 68.3 per cent

7) Hibs - 72.4 per cent

6) Hearts - 72.6 per cent

5) Livingston - 72.6 per cent

4) St Johnstone - 76.7 per cent

3) Rangers - 81 per cent

2) Aberdeen - 85 per cent

1) Celtic - 88.6 per cent
