The Dolphins’ youth experiment continues with latest signing

The Miami Dolphins’ latest signing of defensive lineman Adolphus Washington makes perfect sense — especially when you consider the philosophy the Dolphins have adopted this offseason. They have hoarded young, cheap players who were once regarded as highly gifted or talented prospects, in hopes that they have the keys to unlocking some undiscovered potential.

Consider the additions: QB Josh Rosen (22 years old), CB Eric Rowe (26 years old), TE Clive Walford (27 years old), LB Nate Orchard (26 years old), DL Adolphus Washington (24 years old).

Each of these acquisitions is still in their physical prime and were at least third-round selections in their respective NFL draft classes. Rosen was a first-round pick; the Dolphins will pay him just over $6 million for the next three seasons. Rowe and Orchard are former second-round players and Walford and Washington were selected in the third round of their drafts.

This philosophy may not bear much fruit, but if it does, kudos to Miami’s coaching staff. Talent was clearly not a problem with these players not reaching their full potential, so can the Dolphins supply the environment to help boost them to the next level as players?

That is — and always has been — the stated goal of head coach Brian Flores. Even if the Dolphins hit on one or two of these acquisitions, they’ll have eliminated roster holes on the cheap with sustainable talent for several years at the very least.
