The Dolphins still have several open roster spots to fill

This past weekend, the Miami Dolphins added six draft selections to their roster, plus several other undrafted free agents and one big addition via trade. But this team isn’t done yet. Spotrac currently lists the Dolphins as having 81 active players on their roster — if you include the team’s unsigned six selections from the 2019 draft.

Teams are allowed to carry 90 players into training camp, so the Dolphins are still in need of nearly 10 extra bodies to fully flesh out their roster. With the lion’s share of undrafted free agents now committed to new teams, Miami’s best bet with its final nine roster spots is to target short-term veterans who can help the team’s efforts to stabilize the culture of the locker room and help evaluate its long term pieces in 2019.

Remember, this team isn’t looking to tank — despite the popular belief. The Dolphins would like to compete in 2019, but they’re not going to mortgage the future to do so. The looming veteran signings will be quite telling on where Miami feels it most needs help assessing its long-term.
