The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay being dismantled - and this is what's happening to it next

It was one of the city's most popular attractions, but since the Doctor Who Experience has closed its doors, the big blue building has laid almost permanently empty.

Aside from a brief spell as a gig venue for the Eisteddfod , it has been empty since it closed to the public in September 2017.

Work has now begun to dismantle the building.

The plastic covering is being removed ahead of the whole structure being dismantled when it's expected it will be put into storage.

It has been acquired by House of Sport, owned by Steve Borley, Cardiff City FC Director and House of Sport founder. The plan is to reconstruct the structure in Llanrumney where it will be used as a football academy and centre of excellence.

House of Sport already has three facilities in the city.

The land is owned by Welsh Government and it is understood plans are being discussed for how the site can be used.

The Doctor Who Experience opened in Cardiff in July 2012 as part of a deal with BBC Worldwide.

The closure cost Cardiff council - which had leased the land from the Welsh Government - more than £1m.

The cost of dismantling and removing the structure is not being paid by the council.

House of Sport was unavailable for comment.
