Leticia Cáceres directs a funny and observant play that looks at friendship and society’s revered view of motherhood, written by Deborah Bruce. It takes the themes of Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 play A Doll’s House, where a woman walked out on her family to discover herself, and transports them into the 21st century.
It stars Susan Prior (Puberty Blues, Rake) as Bea, a woman who has left her marriage in Australia and is on her way home to Britain. Her friends sympathise with her for a while – until she announces her two children will stay in Melbourne with their father. She’s not cut out for motherhood, she says, so why should she pretend?
Ibsen’s central question as to whether a woman can really be herself in modern society is posed once again. With a large dose of humour, Bruce pokes fun at how society sees motherhood and the role of women today.
