The 'disgusting' state of the old Royal British Legion hall in Neath

Rubbish, clothes and drug paraphernalia outside an old Royal British Legion building are turning it into an "eyesore", say residents.

The club, in Eastland Road, Neath, was due to celebrate its centenary in 2018 but closed after dwindling membership in 2017.

Since then, the state of its grounds is said to have deteriorated and it's now not clear who is responsible.

According to the Royal British Legion, it no longer owns the building.

Stacey Teakle, 28, lives nearby and said: "It's disgusting. It's really not nice, particularly because when you come into Neath it's the first thing you see," she said.

"The building is not in use and on top of that there's all this rubbish - it's not nice and it's attracting rats."

She said Neath Port Talbot Council had been contacted by her family, but had said it did not own the land.

She added: "It wasn’t exactly in the best condition when the Legion was open and we’ve always had issues with regards to used needles there and drug dealers going down the lane behind the Legion.

"But obviously since it’s closed it’s just deteriorated."

She said she'd seen all sorts of rubbish there, including clothes, household items, letters "and much more".

Neath Port Talbot Council has been asked to comment.
