The disgusting mess of drugs, food and smashed glass left in Dylan Thomas Cwmdonkin Park in Swansea

This is the disgusting pile of mess was left dumped the park made famous by Welsh writer Dylan Thomas.

Drugs, cans, food and cigarette packets covered the floor of a shelter in Cwmdonkin Park, in Uplands , Swansea.

A local resident, who did not want to be named, came across the "horrific" mess while walking her dog.

"In the evenings it's an area where people take drugs because it's under cover," she said.

"We can see the aftermath of it because first thing in the mornings I'm walking the dog.

"Usually there's just a few cans and drug material but this was just horrific.

"There were lots of cigarette packets, little popper bottles and food that hadn't even been unwrapped. I've never seen it that bad before.

"There was lots of smashed glass and alcohol bottles too.

"It's spoiling it for all of the families and it's awful to think these people could stop people coming to the park."

After the mess was reported, Swansea Council arrived and cleared it away.

A spokesman for the council said: "Littering and fly tipping is totally unnecessary and illegal.

"When we are informed needles and other discarded drug paraphernalia are involved then it is made a priority for our cleansing teams.

"We urge residents who witness acts of fly tipping to get in touch so we can investigate and carry our enforcement where appropriate."

Thomas grew up near the park, which was one of his favourite places as a child.

It was referenced in his poem Should Lanterns Shine and also in his radio broadcast Reminiscences of Childhood.

In 2013, it was given a £1.4million makeover - which included the restoration of a drinking fountain as well the opening of 1930s style tearoom.
