The 'disgusting' fly-tipping in a Newport lane during lockdown

A video showing extensive fly-tipping near Newport city centre was filmed and posted online by a resident, angry at the "disgusting" scene she found.

The video, which shows items of rubbish strewn along a lane near Clarence Place, was filmed by Leigh Devonshire after shopping at the nearby Iceland supermarket.

Ms Devonshire described how she normally drives to Spytty Retail Park to do her grocery shopping, but decided last weekend to shop locally instead.

Walking to Clarence Place at around midday on Saturday, June 13, she discovered the rows of waste dumped in an adjacent lane, behind The Neon.

"Sadly I was faced with that disgusting sight.

"I was shocked. There were rats everywhere.

"I walked home a different way as the smell was terrible and there were hundreds of flies."

Fly-tipping in Newport, both in the city centre and further afield, has been an ongoing concern for local residents.

In April, WalesOnline reported on the lane in question after pictures showing it being used for illegal waste disposal were posted to social media.

In February, concerns were also raised by residents regarding fly-tipping and the illegal dumping of waste in another area of the city.

Newport City Council also proposed an additional £213,000 of funding to "make the city centre more attractive, safer and cleaner" as part of its 2020/21 Budget.

In May, the Docks Way household waste recycling centre was reopened after closing at the beginning of lockdown.

From May 26, the centre reopened for "booked, essential visits only." Residents are encouraged to book visits online, via Newport council's website.

Within Newport, Gwent Police is working to tackle the issue of fly-tipping in partnership with Natural Resources Wales.

A spokesperson for Newport Council said: "We have cleared this site on numerous occasions despite it being an unadopted highway but, sadly, people continue to dump their waste there.

"We would urge anyone with information about those responsible to report it to the council."
