The disbelieving look from former Wales coach as his little Namibia side take shock lead against New Zealand

One thing Phil Davies probably never expected when he became Namibia coach four years ago was to see his World Cup minnows take the lead against rugby super power New Zealand.

So when that actually happened three minutes into the Pool B game involving the two sides, Davies' reaction told its own story.

Scrum-half Damian Stevens popped up with a cracking penalty kick from near the touchline four minutes into the Tokyo clash.

Davies could be seen in the coaching box roundly applauding... before giving a kind of bemused shrug of the shoulders as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing!

The Namibian lead, of course, couldn't last and the World Cup favourites quickly got into try-scoring mode en route to their expected comfortable 71-9 victory.

But, momentarily at least, it provided a lovely moment for Davies, who spent two years learning his trade at international level as Wales under-20s coach.

He became boss of Namibia in 2015, via coaching spells at the Scarlets and Cardiff Blues, as well, of course, as the spell in charge of Wales' age-grade side when the likes of Jonathan Davies, Dan Biggar and Leigh Halfpenny were coming through.

Davies said afterwards: "The scoreboard was a bit cruel in the end, but we're pleased with the way we applied ourselves against the best team in the world."
