The dilemma that could face Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane following AFCON switch

Liverpool pair Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane could be caught up in a club vs country dilemma in the not so near future.

World governing body FIFA have announced plans to play the 2021 Club World Cup in June and July, clashing with the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Club World Cup will be staged in China between 17 June and 4 July with an expanded 24 teams, with the new schedule set to clash with Africa's showpiece event.

The next AFCON finals are scheduled for June-July 2021 in Cameroon, although the tournament could still possibly be played solely in July.

Should Liverpool claim this season's Champions League then they would qualify for the tournament in China as a result, meaning the pair face the possibility of having to pick one or the other.

And even if a solution is found, the duo still face the prospect of having to play throughout the whole summer without a rest, which could have a negative impact on Liverpool's 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

The Reds will contest this season's Club World Cup in Qatar after claiming their sixth European Cup in June.

As Champions League holders, Liverpool have qualified directly for the competition’s semi-finals and will play their last-four tie on Wednesday December 18, although their opponents are not yet known.
