The different ways people in Bristol have been breaching coronavirus lockdown

Police have handed out more than 200 fines to people for breaching the coronavirus lockdown in Bristol and surrounding areas.

Avon and Somerset police revealed they have received 13,985 reports of people failing to obey the Government's instructions on social distancing since March 23.

The force has issued 214 fixed penalty notices for breaches, 89 of which were in Bristol.

These offences fall into three main categories.

Most notices – 67 per cent - were handed out for people breaking the restriction on movement.

Just over 16 per cent were issued for restrictions on public gatherings.

And a further 15 per cent went to people who failed to comply with an instruction or direction.

There was one for an offence of obstruction and another for failing to comply with a prohibition notice without a reasonable excuse.

It comes as the force outlined plans to clamp down on a rise of bad driving during lockdown.

Chief constable Andy Marsh said last week: “We have an application that updates every 60 minutes and tells us where there are breaches.

“We’re deploying officers and PCSOs proactively to those hotspots to engage, encourage and explain, and on occasion take formal enforcement action against those that will not listen.

“I interpret that as the public saying we’re complying and we want everyone to comply.

“The public are policing themselves, by and large. I’ve been out across the force and seen remarkable levels of compliance."

The lockdown means people can leave home only to exercise once a day, travel to and from work when "absolutely necessary", shop for essential items and to meet medical needs.

Breaches can be reported on the Avon and Somerset Constabulary website.
