The different role Steven Bergwijn can take up for Tottenham that could benefit Son Heung-min

Tottenham fans will be looking to see more from Steven Bergwijn once Premier League football finally resumes.

Joining the club at the end of January from PSV, the Dutch international made a stunning start to life in north London with a brilliant volley on his home debut against Man City.

Impressing in his first seven games for the club with his direct running and trickery, Bergwijn unfortunately missed the crucial Champions League Round of 16 second leg clash against RB Leipzig due to an ankle injury picked up at Burnley.

The current break in play means that the 22-year-old didn't miss anymore games and the good news is that he is now back to fitness for when Premier League football is up and running again.

Perhaps a bit of a surprise signing at the turn of the year given Spurs' need for a striker in Harry Kane's absence, it was a deal the club couldn't turn down having scouted him in the past and his versatility will prove key for years to come.

Speaking following the signing of Bergwijn, Mourinho opened up on the type of player the club had managed to land.

"We've got a kid with amazing potential, that's going to be cared for and loved and that I think is going to be a fantastic player for us and a player the fans will learn how to love, because he's the profile of a player that our fans will love," said the 57-year-old.

"He is an attacking option, of course he's not a striker, he's a player that likes to play from the sides, at PSV more from the left, for the national team more from the right.

"He's not a player to resolve the problems of today, because our future is not today or tomorrow, it's long-term.

"A profile of player, very, very young, very adapted to the way we want to play football and we're very happy to have him."

Mainly utilised on the left wing since his move to the club as that's where he can really punish the opposition, the Dutchman was also played upfront in the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea as Mourinho made a couple of changes to his starting XI.

Although Mourinho didn't allude to it at the time, his January signing can also play behind the main striker as an attacking midfielder.

It's an area Spurs are well stocked in with Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela all capable of playing there, yet Bergwijn could be another option for the head coach if he isn't to be played on the left.

One debate that has come up since his move to the club is in regards to where Son Heung-min will play once everyone is fit and available as he usually plays from the left.

The goals have flowed for the South Korean over the past few seasons, with nine goals and five assists so far this term when he has started in his usual role.

Well, in order to keep Son operating from the left once Mourinho has a full squad to choose from, he could start Bergwijn as an attacking midfielder rather than moving him out to the right.

The Amsterdam-born player is no stranger to this role having played there for PSV in the Eredivisie and European competition this season.

In fact, 11 of his 35 games in all competitions this campaign have come as an attacking midfielder, with 13 of those as left winger.

His stats are impressive in a central role as well as he has two goals and seven assists to his name, although he tends to find the back of the net more from the left as he has five goals and two assists.

Mourinho pointed out Bergwijn's versatility after his arrival at the club and that's exactly what he offers Spurs.

Given the attacking options the Spurs boss has at his hands, it's only a good thing that the talented player can play in a variety of different roles and that's what he may well end up doing over the course of his time in N17.
