The 'different level' Newcastle United training session which left Ivan Toney 'out of breath'

Ivan Toney admits his first training session with Newcastle United was 'different level' and making the step up with the Magpies was 'crazy'.

The striker made his first-team debut for Newcastle against former club Northampton Town - just two-and-a-half weeks after completing his move from the Cobblers in 2015.

Toney would make just three further appearances for Newcastle and, following several loan spells in League One, the Northampton native moved to Peterborough on a permanent deal in 2018.

After impressing at London Road, Toney earned a move to Championship side Brentford last summer and the 24-year-old has already scored 10 goals for his new club.

Toney will come up against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals next month and it's safe to say he has never forgotten his first training session with the Magpies after rubbing shoulders with Gini Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko et al.

“It was crazy and it was a big jump,” he told Soccer AM. "I think going from League Two to the Premier League, it’s always going to be a big difference.

“Even the intensity of the training. If you lose the ball, nine times out of 10, it’s a goal. I remember my first session, I am running around and I am out of breath thinking, 'This is different level’.

“But the kind of person I am and how I take things in my stride, I adapted quite quick I feel.”
