The Devil Wears Prada 2 Grosses $234 Million during Opening Weekend

Twenty years after The Devil Wears Prada took the world by storm, Miranda Priestly has made her return to our screens with the worldwide release of Devil Wears Prada 2. The movie features most of the original cast, including icon Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt.

A Story that Never Went out of Style

The original movie, Devil Wears Prada, came out in 2006, and it became one of the defining movies of the genre. Even though fans expected a sequel to drop not long after, waiting so long allowed a whole new generation of people to discover the iconic characters.

This trend is becoming more and more common across entertainment too. Many artists are releasing 20th anniversary editions of their albums, and some are going as far as to do full tours in support of classic releases.

One would be when Trivium and Bullet for My Valentine toured together for the Poisoned Ascendancy Tour, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of both The Poison and Ascendancy.

The bands sold out arenas across the UK, and fans got to hear the iconic albums in full. Frasier is another example. The show was brought back almost 20 years after the NBC series concluded. Another example would be the Double Bubble slot game

This title is still being offered online, and even though it was first released in 2006, it’s still loved today. There are a number of new features, including the Bubble Line Multiplier, showing how classics can be brought back to new audiences if they align with the current times and audience preferences.

When considering all of this, it’s obvious that the release of Devil Wears Prada 2 has come at the right time. The original movie has been drawing viewers for years now, long after its original release. The actors and actresses in the original movie have also gone on to do incredible things, but the fact that they have reunited for a sequel shows that good stories never get old.

The Sequel Shifts its Focus

The sequel puts a big focus on digital media. Traditional print publications are losing revenue, and Miranda Priestly finds herself battling Emily Charlton, her former assistant, who has become part of the opposite industry.

The movie focuses on the landscape right now, where digital formats dominate, but at the same time, pays homage to the things that made the original movie so special. Audiences have embraced the return of the franchise, and the movie grossed $77 million domestically. It ended up being the biggest opening of Meryl Streep's career, and the strongest debut of a comedy since 2015.

As the movie has done so well, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a third movie released; however, it may be some time before news of this is announced. So far, the Devil Wears Prada franchise has surpassed the $1 billion mark. The new movie is going to be streamed to home audiences as well, which means we can expect to see a second wave of popularity over the coming months.
