The devastating aftermath of a horror car crash that claimed the lives of two men - police are still trying to piece together what happened

Detectives are continuing to piece together the events leading up to a horrific crash in Whitefield which killed two men.

They died after a Vauxhall Astra on Bury Old Road.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened at around 1.30am on Sunday morning (October 6).

The car landed on its roof.

Police said there were two men in the vehicle. One of them died at the scene.

The second man was taken to hospital. Despite the best efforts of paramedics and medics, he was later pronounced dead.

Police said that as of Monday afternoon, the men had not been formally identified.

Other details, including the men's ages and where they were from, has not yet been released by the force.

Officers remained at the scene, near the Welcome Inn pub, on Monday morning.

The road outside was closed for several hours while officers dealt with the aftermath of the smash and carried out enquiries.

The stretch eventually re-opened late on Sunday morning.

The wall outside Vallance and Associates dentists, next to the pub, was flattened, with debris flung across the road.

GMP said in a statement on Sunday: "Officers were called to reports of a collision shortly after 1.30am on Sunday 6 October on Bury Old Road, Whitefield.

"A silver Vauxhall Astra had collided with a road sign, resulting in the car hitting a nearby wall.

"There were two men in the car, one man sadly died at the scene. The second man was taken to hospital and despite the best efforts of emergency staff, was also sadly pronounced dead a short time later."
