The deserted Welsh railway station with only 14 passengers a week

Railway stations can possess an eerie atmosphere when you find yourself stood on a deserted platform.

Across Wales there are many stations that are rarely used, and their existence can go unnoticed due to their status as a request only stop.

Sugar Loaf railway station is the most geographically remote station on the Heart of Wales Line.

It is located about a mile to the north-east of the popular Sugar Loaf viewpoint and picnic spot, but the station itself is the least used station in the whole of Wales.

According to station usage data published by the Office of Rail and Road, there were just 708 entries and exits from Sugar Loaf station last year.

On average just 14 passengers used the station each week.

Its usage has fallen from 61.6% from 1,846 entries and exits in 2017/18.

In comparison Cardiff Central is Wales' busiest station, with 14.2 million entries and exits last year, a 9.7% rise on the previous.

The Heart of Wales Line through the Sugar Loaf area was opened by the Central Wales Extension Railway in 1868.

Sugar Loaf station was briefly closed to passengers in 1965 but subsequently reopened to traffic in 1984.

It was originally built to serve a number of cottages occupied by railway workers but is now mainly used as a stop by trekkers and cyclists looking to visit the Sugar Loaf.

Its facilities include a waiting shelter and timetable display.
