Martin Dubravka is the only goalkeeper in the Premier League to make more than 100 saves this season.
Dubravka has been outstanding since signing for Newcastle two years ago but it is this season when his importance to the cause has been most marked.
According to new stats published by TheOther14, the Slovakia goalkeeper has made 102 saves – the most of any goalkeeper in the top flight – and has a 73.9% save percentage, which is the second highest in the league behind Sheffield United stopper Dean Henderson.
Dubravka’s incredible save count, which is 16 more than nearest rival Mat Ryan of Brighton, illustrates just how much Newcastle have been up against it at times this season.
United’s possession, shot and attacking stats are all amongst the lowest in the division but their points tally has them comfortably clear of the Premier League drop zone at the moment. While the narrative of the last fortnight has been about whether it’s sustainable and how much Steve Bruce should be held to account for their displays, there appears to be one big reason why Newcastle are able to maintain the points tally with their performances: Dubravka.
Man of the match last weekend, Dubravka has rescued Newcastle on countless occasions this season.
In addition to the displays, Dubravka is also seen as an influential voice behind-the-scenes at Newcastle as well. He signed a new contract earlier this season which commits him to St James’ Park until 2025 and Newcastle will be thankful of that in a campaign that has seen him establish himself as one of the outstanding goalkeepers in the top flight.
