The Dean Munich marks Irish hotel brand’s second opening in Germany

Irish hospitality brand The Dean has opened the doors to its new design-led hotel in Munich – its second property in Germany following the opening of The Dean Berlin in February.

Located in Munich's Westend district, the 281-room boutique property is just a short distance from Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt and the city's historic centre.

Blending Bavarian heritage with contemporary elements, The Dean Munich's interiors have been created by London-based designer Tatjana von Stein, who drew inspiration from both Bavaria's Art Nouveau heritage, known as “Jugendstil”, and Munich's colourful 1980s nightlife.

Throughout the hotel, custom furniture and lighting designed by von Stein sits alongside vintage pieces and lighting sourced from Cologne-based Studio Kuhlmann and a bespoke sound system by Friendly Pressure.

“This is a city rooted in history but always drawn to reinvention,” says von Stein. “I wanted to capture that tension – somewhere between elegance and exuberance – and let it guide every surface, object and gesture.

"The design also brings to life a side of Munich only locals truly know: its rich musical and cultural spirit, quietly woven into the character of the city.’’

Rooms, dining and facilities

There are 281 rooms at The Dean Munich, with guests able to choose from a range of accommodation options, from standard rooms to ‘The Dean Suite’ and ‘The Penthouse Suite’.

The hotel features three bars alongside Ibasho, a contemporary Japanese restaurant making its debut at the property. Created with consultant chef Alex Craciun, the menu includes pressed sushi, premium sashimi, robata-grilled meats and seafood, plus an extensive saké and cocktail list.

Guests can also unwind at Power, The Dean's fitness and wellness concept, which includes an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, treatment room and recovery-focused gym offering music-led fitness classes and thermal experiences.

Westend: what’s in the area?

Officially known as Schwanthalerhöhe, Westend is “a district on the move”, said the Simple Munich website. Home to up to 25 nationalities, who “live together in a thriving community”, Westend has evolved from a traditional working-class neighbourhood into a “vibrant melting pot” of cultures and creative life.

With historic buildings and lively streets, visitors to Westend can discover a “flourishing” scene of art, gastronomy and history.

Westend is “Munich at its most authentic”, said the hotel brand. Here, “different worlds share the same street” where "old breweries and bakeries sit next to art studios, world-famous beer gardens a short hop from the tech district".

Rooms at The Dean Munich start from €225 per night.
