The Dayot Upamecano alternative Arsenal have been backed to sign in the January transfer window

Arsenal have been linked with several top names ahead of the January transfer window and Kevin Campbell thinks one of them could well solve a key area of weakness for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta is heading into his first transfer window tomorrow as the head coach of Arsenal and whilst major overhauls are not expected until the summer, the Spaniard could well bring in some new recruits.

An area of worry for the Gunners is their defence, with 30 goals conceded in 20 league matches so far this season in the Premier League.

Campbell says there is a lack of leaders in the Arsenal team and that has been particularly felt defensively, with the late collapse against Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday an example of the problems which Arteta needs to sort out.

What to expect from Arsenal in the January transfer window

Whilst Arsenal are reportedly preparing a £50 million move for RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano, out-of-favour Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is one of the potentially cheaper options linked with a switch to the capital and Campbell admits a deal would make a lot of sense for one key reason.

"He was at Man City before and it didn't work out for him there but we do know that he is a very good player," Campbell, who was speaking on behalf of GentingBet, told football.london.

"He is someone who not only has done well domestically in his career, but has starred on the international scene for Germany.

"He has been a leader and Arsenal don't have too many of them knocking about at the back. I'm sure Mikel Arteta will have done his homework on the player and found out if he is the right type of character for his side.

"I would certainly not second guess that move if it did come to fruition."
