The day Nottingham Forest beat Barcelona at the City Ground

As European football made it's return to our screens this week, we have decided to take a look back at the day Nottingham Forest beat FC Barcelona 1-0 at the City Ground.

The Reds, who had lifted the European Cup under Brian Clough the season before, were one of the most feared sides in football.

After winning the English First Division in 1978, they conquered Europe in 1979.

Forest welcomed a Barcelona side who, under manager and club legend Joaquim Rifé, were crowned Cup Winners' Cup champions after beaten Fortuna Düsseldorf in a seven goal thriller in Switzerland.

Charlie George, signed on loan from Southampton, scored the games only goal when he gave Clough's men the lead after just nine minutes.

Among Forest's starting eleven that day there were plenty of Reds legends.

Peter Shilton had by this stage already earned 29 England caps and amassed nearly 600 Football League appearance.

Trevor Francis, England's first £1m player, started alongside George in attack and current boss Martin O'Neill was in midfield.

The Second Leg

When the two sides met for the second leg a week later, 80,000 packed into the Nou Camp fully expecting to see their Barcelona side turn the tie around.

After just 25 minutes, the home side found themselves level when Roberto Dinamite blasted a spot-kick into Shilton's net.

Forest would respond just before half-time when Scottish international, and Reds legend, Kenny Burns equalised to put his side ahead with a goal that would win Clough the UEFA Super Cup and bookend an astonishing year in the club's history.

Four months later they would be back in Spain to retain the European Cup with a 1-0 win over Hamburg on a memorable night in Madrid.

A January Super Cup Clash

The game, initially meant to be played in 1979, was pushed back on a number of occasions with the two clubs unable to agree a suitable date.

This was not uncommon in the 70's, as the date chosen by the organisers often clashed with team's busy end-of-year fixtures schedules.

Although the competition only started seven years previous, it was the third final to be played late, after Ajax's 6-3 win over Rangers (1972) and their 6-1 demolition of Milan (1973) were both pushed back beyond the new year.

Charlie George

George, the hero that day at the City Ground, only ever made four appearances for the Reds.

A legend at Arsenal, George won the FA Cup and the First Division during his time at Highbury, but was only ever with the Forest on loan.

A string of injuries, an on-field altercation that saw him headbutt Kevin Keegan, and an argument with manager Berite Mee saw him eventually leave the Gunners to join Derby.

Short spells in Australia and the United States were followed by a return to English Football with Southampton where he scored eleven goals in 44 appearances.

His time at Forest was short-lived, but his goal against Barcelona at the City Ground cemented a place in Forest folklore forever.
