The day forecasters say it could snow in Leeds next week

The Met Office has said Leeds is in for a period of unsettled weather but some weather charts are showing more than just rain on the horizon.

Strong winds and heavy rain are forecast for many northern areas of the UK on Saturday, particularly for Scotland and northern England, where several weather warnings have been issued.

After a quieter day on Sunday, further weather warnings have been issued for Monday, as another Atlantic low-pressure system moves across the country. During this time high winds are expected - possibly hitting 70mph along coastlines.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: “There are signs of further low-pressure systems developing throughout next week which are likely to bring further gales and heavy rain almost anywhere and possible snow to some northern parts of the UK.”

However charts put together on WX Charts by MetDesk show snowfall over Leeds on Friday, January 17 and the last time the charts predicted snow in December - the area did see some.

This date sits within the period forecasters who have studied 100 years of data believe it is most likely to snow in the city.

Weather site MetCheck says January 14 to 25 usually sees snow in Leeds - and the heaviest snow is most likely to fall on January 20.

However, it's always best to take these forecasts with a pinch of salt. In Leeds there is actually science behind the city being less likely to experience snow compared to surrounding areas.
