It’s difficult to muster much sympathy for a millionaire who spends most of his days in the sunshine while the rest of us back in Scotland are starting to evolve webbed feet after four months of torrential ruddy rain.
But you’d have a heart of stone if you didn’t feel a little bit sorry for Dave King.
The Rangers chairman must be feeling cursed.
This is supposed to be his final few weeks in the gig. It has been four months since his tearful address and standing ovation at the Armadillo when he declared he was set to stand down by the end of March.
Well, here we are. The clock is ticking.
King admitted he has never enjoyed being chairman, he has reluctantly thrown fortunes into the club and got out the begging bowl to encourage his pals to do the same.
But in November he insisted everything was cool. There was a big share issue on the way to dig out the £10million needed to see out the season, he was writing off the dosh he’d ploughed in and would sail off into the sunset leaving behind a club that could stand on its own two feet.
King will arrive back in Glasgow and find out the babysitter has effed off and the weans have trashed the house.
Tangibly close to being the dominant force in Scotland, was how King described it.
The reality is Rangers are still a million miles away.
The league is out of sight, the trophy cabinet is still empty and goodness knows when or where the promised cash injection is coming from.
King has delivered on his promises. He has sunk in tens of millions along with the likes of Douglas Park, George Letham, George Taylor and John Gilligan.
They’ve done their bit.
But they have been let down by the football department, time and time again. King wants out but he wanted to leave a peaceful oasis behind. How the heck can he go now? It would look like legging it from a crime scene.
Rangers are malfunctioning on the pitch and are still locked in legal square goes with Sports Direct and Hummel. They still need serious dough to keep ticking over, never mind fund the rebuild needed to make a decent fist of a title race next season.
Steven Gerrard insists he’s all in and the same goes for the board. It’s unlikely they could afford to empty him and his huge staff, even if they wanted to.
Gerrard would probably be clearing his desk if it wasn’t for the brilliant European run and the fact he’s got potential as a boss.
He has made mistakes but that’s what rookie managers do. Usually they make them in the lower divisions.
Gerrard’s lost his grip on the dressing room. He ran a double decker over his players in public. His key men are admitting they can’t handle the pressure at home and his star man Alfredo Morelos is a law unto himself.
It’s going to take a heck of a job getting it all back on track and an official endorsement from above might be a start.
The nameless statements on the club website are not cutting it.
King has two choices.
Stick to his Ibrox exit plan or return to Ibrox, back his manager and grab the club by the lapels.
Rangers fans are in limbo and they need answers. They need a vision. They need to know the plan.
King has to s*** or get off the pot because Rangers are rudderless and sympathy for the main man will eventually run out.
