The date you should take down your Christmas decoration amid conflicting traditions and risk of 'curse'

It's just two days after Christmas Day but some people are already taking down their decoration ahead of the New Year.

The decorations have been up for over a number now in some Irish households and may be gathering dust already, prompting some people to whip them down and put them back in the attic.

However, there is a traditions - actually conflicting traditions - suggesting when you should take down the decorations.

According to tradition, Christmas decorations should be taken down and put away on the 5th of January, the twelfth night after Christmas day. However, others argue that the 6th of January (The Feast of Epiphany) is tradition as it is the 12th night following the big day.

The superstition is that if not removed on these days, you will be cursed with bad luck for the next year.

This superstition stemmed from hundreds of years ago when it was believed that Christmas trees were home to tree spirits. People in the past said that each spirit was set free by removing their festive tree from their homes in the first week of January. They held the idea that if this ritual wasn’t followed correctly, it may negatively impact agriculture in the year ahead.

To answer your question, it's entirely up to you whether you are superstitious or traditional in your ways when it comes to the date you should strip your home of Christmas décor!
