The date nightclubs in England could reopen again under lockdown roadmap

Nightclubs and gig venues have been one of the hardest-hit sectors in the last 12 months, forced to close for almost a full year.

The nightlife sector has finally been given a ray of hope today though as Boris Johnson has set out England's roadmap for leaving lockdown.

As long as infection rates and the vaccine roll-out continue to track in the right direction, it's hoped that nightclubs will be able to finally reopen this summer.

It will be the first time venues have welcomed customers inside since March 2020, minus a select few that adapted to a bar operation.

Although it's positive news that the industry has finally been given acknowledgement and a possible reopening date, nightclubs will still be last in the queue to reopen.

The PM has set out a four-step plan for easing lockdown measures, which will be driven by data rather than dates.

The dates given will be the earliest possible that restrictions will ease, with five weeks between each step.

It is hoped that from June 21, all legal limits on social contact can be removed.

It will mean that the final closed sectors, such as nightclubs which never reopened last summer, can finally get back to business.

Plans begin with reopening schools on March 8, before outdoor gatherings and outdoor sports are allowed from March 29.

Step two, currently April 12 at the earliest, will see non-essential retail, hairdressers, libraries and museums, gyms, outdoor hospitality, and zoos and theme parks reopen.

From May 17, step three will allow indoor hospitality to open, along with hotels, B&Bs, and some live events.

Step three could also see cinemas reopen, alongside theatres with audiences less than 1000 or at half-capacity, whichever is smaller.
