The date Labour's leadership contest will start has been revealed

Labour has announced that their new leader will be in place by March.

They say that Jeremy Corbyn has asked for a swift process to replace him, and that a new leader is to be appointed within months, according to Politics Home.

Labour suffered its worst General Election result since 1935 in the election on December 12.

In a letter to colleagues, General Secretary of the Labour Party, Jennie Formby, has said there has been a lot of speculation about the timetable.

She says: "To be clear, this will be decided by the full NEC and not by NEC officers. I can also advise that Jeremy has asked that the NEC start the process swiftly so a new leader may be elected by the end of March."

The timetable for both the leadership election and deputy leadership will be decided on Tuesday, but there is a recommendation for the election process to start on January 7.

There have been calls from Welsh MPs, past and present, for Mr Corbyn to quit immediately.

Those tipped as a potential successor to Mr Corbyn are: Corbyn loyalist Rebecca Long-Bailey, outspoken Corbyn critic and MP for Birmingham Yardley Jess Phillips, Lisa Nandy, the MP for Wigan, shadow education secretary Angela Rayner, shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer and shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry.
