The dark side of blogging

Threats of death and violence made against female bloggers is a subject gaining increasing coverage, in the wake of the vile anonymous attacks targeted at the likes of Kathy Sierra, a technology blogger.

According to the Washington Post: "Women, who make up about half the online community, are singled out in more starkly sexually threatening terms - a trend that was first evident in chat rooms in the early 1990s and is now moving to the blogosphere."

According to some estimates, there will be 97.2 million female internet users in 2007 - making up 51.7% of the total online population in the US. But weight of numbers seems to making little difference to the sometimes poisonous atmosphere online.
