The Dark Lord series by Jamie Thompson – review

The Dark Lord series is a hilarious set of three books with a story unlike one I’ve ever read before. It tells the story of an evil monster (The Dark Lord) who rules a land called the Darklands. He can cast spells and has an army of goblins and elves until one day his enemy, Hasdruban the Pure, sends him to earth in the form of a weak human teenager.

I like the first book the most as it’s about Dirk Lloyd (the Dark Lord) finding out about earth and all the things on it. He still acts like he’s in charge of everyone which gets him into trouble and he keeps on trying to do spells and rituals from the Darklands. None of these work though except for one which sends one of his best friends Sooz to his own world, instead of himself.

The second book is all about Dirk and his foster brother Christopher trying to get into contact with Sooz – they create an evil mobile phone which lets them speak to her. They find out that she has become the Queen of the Darklands and has undone all the wicked things the Dark Lord did. Using a pair of magic boots, Dirk and Christopher travel through the worlds to help Sooz escape from Hasdruban’s clutches. Then they are all sent back to earth, this time with some of the Dark Lord’s evil monsters with them.

In the third book Hasdruban the Pure becomes Dirk’s head teacher and he needs to make a plan to get rid of him. Using his detachable hand, a secret trapdoor and some poisoned wine gums he manages to do it and even has time to teach his evil monsters to play musical instruments.

If you like action and comedy you should definitely read these books and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I did.
