The 'dangerous' rusty railings in Swansea Marina that have got people worried

Rusty and broken railings along a mile long stretch have prompted fresh concerns about safety in Swansea Marina .

The damaged barriers stretch from Swansea Observatory to the Coast Cafe, along a section of the Wales Coast Path that runs past Swansea Point apartments.

Those living in Swansea Marina say the barriers are now unsafe and are putting people at risk.

Although the stretch of railings are not directly next to the River Tawe, The Maritime Quarter Residents Association (MQRA) said the state of the railings are worrying - especially given that they are along a stretch of the seafront popular with families and tourists.

A spokesman said: "The rail supports are of such poor quality, they’re plastic with steel inside and it’s all falling to pieces. They’re very sharp and brittle and under the plastic is rusty metal.

“The promenade is so important because of the amount of residents and tourists that use it, if something isn’t done, someone is going to get seriously hurt."

The land where the barriers are is privately owned by Persimmon Homes - and residents said the railings are noticeably different from ones installed by the council.

"If you look down the marina, the council's supports and rails are made of solid stainless steell all along the prom" added an MQRA spokesman. "But from the council offices to the observatory, from there onwards they're these cheap supports."

The residents association insisted that 126 of the 380 promenade supports along the stretch of coast are "in a dangerous condition."

A spokesman for Persimmon Homes West Wales said: “We are aware of the issues with the railings and are currently in the process of obtaining quotes, with a view to carrying out the necessary repairs as soon as possible.”
