The dangerous consequences of propping your baby's bottle up

It's no doubt that mums are some of the busiest people on the planet - constantly bathing, dressing and feeding their children.

So it can be tempting to to prop up your baby's bottle while running off to conquer the next task.

However, you must never leave your baby alone to feed with a propped-up bottle - if you do, it could have dangerous consequences.

In 2015, a four-month old baby died after his godmother fell asleep on the sofa.

An inquest was told the godmother had given him a bottle of milk with a blanket propped underneath it.

A post-mortem examination found that the infant, Alex Masters, had inhaled milk into his lungs .

According to Strong For Life , bottle propping forces your baby to keep up with the flow of milk, even if they are full.

This is because the milk is positioned in such a way that it continues coming out the bottle, and your baby runs the risk of overeating or choking.

It's also worth considering that a propped bottle may slip, causing your baby to suck in air, leaving them gassy.

What does the NHS say?

The NHS recommends that before you begin bottle feeding you should make sure that you're sitting comfortably.

Enjoy holding your baby and looking into their eyes as you feed them.

Hold your baby fairly upright for bottle feeds. Support their head so they can breathe and swallow comfortably.

Brush the teat against your baby's lips and, when your they open their mouth wide, let them draw in the teat and allow plenty of time as all babies are different.
