The damning Ian Wright comments to describe misfiring Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke

Former Crystal Palace striker Ian Wright has said he doesn't actually think Eagles striker Christian Benteke will score when he gets a chance in front of goal.

The Belgian striker has struggled in recent seasons for Palace, scoring just five goals since the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign, with Benteke in and out of the team at times this season.

He has not been helped by injury problems in recent seasons, but he has struggled to rediscover the form that saw him score 49 goals in 101 games for Aston Villa, earning him a big-money move to Liverpool, where he netted ten times in 42 appearances before joining Palace.

The striker scored 17 goals in his first season in south London, but has since struggled for form, with just three goals in 31 appearances the following campaign and two goals in 40 games since the beginning of the 2018/19 season.

The most expensive Premier League transfers ever

Benteke recently ended his ten-month goal drought with a goal against Everton in February, but Wright believes that the Palace striker, like Newcastle's Joelinton, is struggling because of two key reasons.

Speaking on BBC podcast Match of the Day Top 10: Premier League goalscorers, Wright said: "A case in point is Christian Benteke.

"You look at someone who was scoring goals at the rate he was and went for the moves he did, and then it has stopped.

"And it has stopped to a point where I watch him now and I actually don't think he is going to score when he gets a chance.

"And that, for me, is a state of mind.

"I always felt if I was scoring in training, I was always confident going into a game, no matter how many games it had been since I scored.

"Speak to them and you try to tell them that. You hear people say that thing about doing the right things, and getting in there, but sometimes you see them and they are not even getting in there. Look at [Newcastle United striker] Joelinton, he's not even getting in there."
