The damning David Moyes stat that shows how bad Liverpool's title defence has been

Manchester United's unwanted Premier League title defence club record set by David Moyes after he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 could be worsened by Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool this season.

Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012/13 season, with Moyes handpicked to replace him at Old Trafford. Moyes' first and only season in charge of United went disastrously as a haphazard and ageing squad could only muster a seventh-placed finish, earning just 64 points and losing 12 games. Ryan Giggs took charge for the final four league games of the season after Moyes was sacked in April 2014.

Of the teams that have won the Premier League title, only Leicester City in 2016/17 and Blackburn in 1995/96 have had worse title-defence campaigns.

And of course, both Leicester and Blackburn have only won one Premier League title and are far from one of the established four teams that have dominated throughout the Premier League era - United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal.

In fact, the only other team to win a Premier League title beyond the dominant four, Leicester and Blackburn, is Liverpool, and they are currently suffering a very similar fate.

Klopp's side lost their fifth straight home match on Thursday night, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat by Chelsea at Anfield.

It leaves them languishing in seventh place, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa having the opportunity to jump above them if they win their games in hand.

Even Arsenal can move to within three points of the Reds, despite Mikel Arteta and his players having a somewhat inconsistent season.

The defeat leaves Liverpool on 43 points from 27 games. Moyes' United had 45 points at the same stage of the 2013/14 season.

If they pick up points for the remainder of the season at the pace they have picked up points at up until this stage, Liverpool will end the season on 60 or 61 points. United ended their title defence on 64 points in 2014.
