The damage and destruction caused to houses by Storm Dennis floods in Bedwas

Residents in Bedwas were faced with up to four feet of flood water on Sunday morning as the ground floors of their properties were submerged.

has been causing damage across Wales with several areas badly flooded from heavy rain overnight.

On Sunday South Wales Police declared the flooding in south Wales a "major incident".

The Met Office also issued a red 'danger to life' weather warning for Sunday morning as river levels continued to rise.

Those living in properties on the A468 The Square, Bedwas, were confined to the upstairs of their properties as the water raged through the ground floor.

Theo Davies said the properties were not insured from flooding due to persistent flooding.

He said: "I woke up this morning to about four foot of water downstairs, It was up to the first floor.

"We could only stay upstairs really as it was up most of the stairs - we've had a lie in."

While the water has mainly cleared from the properties, there is significant damage.

He said: "It's a bit of a nightmare, there's no flood insurance on these properties because it does happen sometimes apparently.

"It has been a little bit stressful, yeah. Thankfully there's no real structural damage.

"It's mainly cosmetic and the washing machine and dryer.

"It's going to be a bit of a clean up mission this week now, we've spent the morning getting sorted.

"I think my neighbour has had it a bit worse than me, they've lost family pets. I'm sure they had to jump out of their first floor window this morning.

"I'm hoping the power comes on soon otherwise my fish will die.

"I've been told it's the first time it's been like this in 20 years."
