The Daily Mirror and Tower of London's legendary doctor dies of cancer

The Daily Mirror's legendary doctor John McGrath has died at the age of 81.

He treated generations of Mirror journalists and staff since he joined the paper back in 1984.

Dr McGrath died peacefully at home with his beloved wife of 50 years Malvida, and his daughter Karen Marr, by his side.

Born in Sydney he worked for a time in Libya where he once treated Colonel Gaddafi.

He was also the Doctor at H.M Tower of London where he lived for over 30 years.

Karen said: “He was such a dignified and unassuming man – and treated everyone the same.

“We have been very touched by some of the letters and tributes we have received.

“He absolutely loved working for the Mirror right back from the days in Fleet Street.

“He and my mum, who is also a doctor, were a team until the end.”

Dr McGrath had bravely battled cancer for six years but continued to work for the Mirror during this time.

He leaves Malvida, three children John, Karen and Duncan and seven grandchildren.
